ABOUT
Solving the supplier normalisation problem
One of the biggest barriers to accurate spend classification and meaningful analytics is messy, inconsistent supplier data. We recognised the need for a tool that any team – from procurement and finance to master data, sales, or marketing could use to quickly and reliably normalise suppliers.
What is supplier normalisation?
Also known as harmonisation or standardisation, supplier normalisation is the process of grouping variations of a company name under a single, consistent identifier. For example, I.B.M, IBM Inc., and IBM Ltd would all become simply IBM.
Why does this matter? Because normalisation gives you a clear, consolidated view of your data — essential for accurate analytics, reporting, and a high-level “helicopter view” of your spend.
Before you can accurately classify and analyse your spend data, you need to normalise your suppliers. Standardising supplier names into a single, consistent format creates a reliable foundation for reporting and analytics, making insights like spend by supplier clear, accurate, and actionable.
Built by experts, trusted by data.
With nearly 40 years of combined experience in supplier normalisation and spend data classification, Samification™ is the brainchild of Susan Walsh, also known as The Classification Guru.
Susan and her team at The Classification Guru created Samification™ to help you normalise suppliers quickly, efficiently, and with confidence. The result? Clean data, trustworthy analysis, and decisions your whole business can get behind.

FAQs
Some commonly asked questions about Samification™
Need more information? Here are some FAQs to help.
How do you say Samification™?
It’s Same-if-i-cation, think gamification but with an S.
What is supplier normalisation?
Normalisation is the process of giving company names a common name or grouping. This is helpful for analytics and reporting as it enables a “helicopter view” of your data. For example, in procurement it could show you how much your client or consumer is buying or how much you are selling to them. Normalisation is particularly useful for departments such as these, where differentiating between legal or financial entities is less important.
How does Samification™ work?
This isn’t your average data tool, it’s tech, automation, and human brains working together. Upload your CSV of supplier or company names to your dashboard, and we’ll get to work. Behind the scenes, our smart model will clean and normalise your data.
As soon as it’s done, we’ll email you, just head back to your dashboard to grab your fresh, clean file. Then our team will give it a final human touch to make sure everything’s spot on.
How accurate is this?
The normalised data you get back will be accurate, but not perfect, though no data set is. If your data contains a specific supplier combination we haven’t seen before, the model might not catch it the first time. But that’s where our not-so-secret sauce comes in. The TCG team will be working in the background regularly, constantly cleaning and improving the master data. The next time you come back for a refresh, your data will be even better than the time before, or the time before that.
Does it translate company names?
At present, we do not instantly translate company names, this is something we look to add as a feature in the future. We do however have a master list of some non-English companies, and the TCG team will work in the background to clean up any supplier names that are added to our master list. If you check back regularly the master list will be updated, and every time you normalise your suppliers, the data will be cleaner.
How often should I normalise my data?
There’s no straight answer to this. It depends on how much data you have and your organisation’s needs. We recommend monthly or quarterly data normalisation to ensure your data is as accurate as possible.
What information do you need?
We need one column of data. This should be labelled “SupplierName” and should contain your supplier or company names. If there are any duplicates during this process, they will be deduplicated and you’ll receive a unique list of suppliers back. By limiting the number of columns, it protects your sensitive information.
What happens to my data?
After your master data has been normalised and delivered, your original supplier names will be added to our global master list in a fully anonymised format. No identifying information is retained, ensuring complete privacy and data protection.
Is this a one-off service?
We advise you to check and maintain your data on a monthly or quarterly basis, depending on your business needs and how many suppliers you have.
